PARADE DAY!

We had so much fun at our parade today! The students looked fantastic after wrapping themselves in an assortment of colorful streamers and balloons. Some were so well wrapped that it impeded their dance moves! After finishing the ArtSpace points and everyone getting stickers and photo DVDs we headed outside with feather masks, glittery floats, bead maracas, and cardboard guitars. Everyone lined up on the pavement and did the first rendition of their dance to "American Boy". We then marched, screaming, yelling, and whistling, around the school throwing candy and doubloons to onlookers until we made it to the flagpole where dancing round two happened. The students did a good job if incorporating dust clouds into their solos with fancy footwork. Exhausted from the heat we headed back inside for water. What a great ArtSpace day and year!

We'll miss you! And have a good summer.

Almost there......

Today we did a dress rehearsal of our parade! We practiced our dance, went over our parade route and made sure all of our throws, floats and masks were looking good. We are so excited to show all of the teachers, family and friends of the kids all the cool things we have been doing in Artspace. They have worked REALLY hard and we are stoked about our parade on Wednesday!!!!!!!

Parade Route!

Now that our dance is done & our masks & floats are looking good, we had to figure out where to have this parade! We decided to take a little journey outside and thought that starting at the jungle gym and walking along the main building of Moya would be best. We also thought it would be cool to start & end the parade with our dance! We will do a dress rehearsal on Monday to make sure everything runs smoothly but it seems to be an awesome plan thus far!

Dance Solos!!!!

Even though we really needed to work on our floats, we couldn't resist a little dance break! The kids are getting really awesome at their dance and we added a super sweet dance circle at the end. Each fabulous dancer gets a solo to show off their skills & they were AWESOME!!!!!!! I can't wait for everyone to see their killer moves during our parade!

Dance and friends

Check out this sweet video of the new dance moves miss Becky taught everyone!
Our parade is going to be epic for sure now that we know we can mix some dance in.

We also hooked our students up with an afterschool program in Cambridge, MA and hopefully some successful penpalships will come out of it. Our students spent the day writing letters to future friends and drawing pictures.

Breakin' With Becky

Unfortunately Mr. Matthew was sick today so we decided to take a break from the messyness of paper mache and have a DANCE DAY!!!! The students were super awesome! We learned some easy break dancing moves and then created a short dance. Hopefully on Wednesday we can videotape their sweet skills!!!!

More Paper Mache!

We only had ArtSpace once this week on Wednesday. Of course there was more paper mâché, and man is it starting to get hot outside! Looks like we are about half way done though. The students were so good on Wednesday, no big messes or shouting - everyone got double artspace points! We stopped working with the goop a little early so that we could get a little drawing time in, cause everyone loves drawing.

Mache Mess

After Mondays paper mache adventure we decided to continue our messy creations outside. Thankfully some students brought a change of clothes this time. This stuff can get everywhere!!! Eek! And boy was it hot today! Hopefully we can get the mess under control & move our float making party inside next week. We will post pics soon!

I'm Turning into the Statue of Liberty!

Today we started to paper mache our mascots!!!! Thankfully we did this OUTSIDE. It got a bit more messy than we expected but everyone had a ton of fun and their projects are looking great! I think the best part of the day was when the goop started to dry on their hands, arms, faces, etc. and they thought they were turning into statues! Here are a few pics of the paper mache madness:

It Begins!

Today we kept working on the Krewe floats, making them bigger and stronger! There was a lot of tape consumed, and a lot of newspaper, quite a flurry of activity. Most krewes worked well as teams, diving up the mascot parts or work in "assembly" lines. Here are some videos from today.

Krewe Floats!!!!!

We started our Krewe floats today! While it looks like a lot of crumpled up newspaper now, it will look AWESOME later! At the end of today we had a snake, a few arms and legs,a bunch of eyes and two BIG heads. Check out this pic of the Cardinals hard at work:

Spring Break

Wow, all those PTA meetings and spring break are really cramping our style! So rather than starting the paper mache floats today, we equipped all the new students with sketchbooks and colored pencils for some good old fashioned drawing time. But what to draw? Ms. McCain, the art teacher at Moya has a fabulous book by Ed Emberley on how to draw animals using simple shapes. It even gives step by step instructions! So I helped a group of boys through the first couple of pages. Since all the animals are made from basic shapes, you can draw them even if you are looking at the book upside down! We found the frog seen on the cover was the most difficult.

The weather was so nice we spent the first quarter of class outside using chalk to draw my favorite thing: Pirate Ships. A ninjas vs. pirates battle ensued...

See you in two weeks!

Krewe Floats: Rough Draft!

After finishing our fabulous masks today we continued drawing a rough draft of our krewe floats. Can you guess which poster belongs to each krewe?

Floats!

Well, the masks are almost done, just a few more beads and feathers needed here and there. So, today we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and held a team hybrid race chalk drawing olympics. Once everyone was worn out we settled down back inside and started sketching ideas for the parade krewe floats.

More Masks!!!!

Since we have neglected our outdoor time lately we decided to start the class in the wonderful sun. Unfortunately it was windy AND cold so we headed back indoors. Outside Fail. Hopefully it will be warmer on Wednesday.

Back to the masks we went! Just when you thought we couldn't add any more glitter to our lovely masks....WE DID!!!! These sparkling pieces of work are AMAZING!!!

OMG Glitter!

So much glitter! And feathers! I think Hailey may have turned into a peacock. With the swing music and masks everyone has been so engrossed in their projects that we've totally forgotten to play ships and sailors; we'll have to get back to playing games next week.

Krewe Masks

Today we started working on Masks for our parade using Krewe colors. Each Krewe also decided on a motto. The Phoenixes have "We fly high" and the Cardinals are "We stick together." Team Sparky is still working on theirs...
